March 30 - May 30, 2004
This powerful coupling of exhibitions presents over one hundred outstanding objects dating from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century, including the work of distinguished artists from Italy, France, England, Holland, and Germany. Life studies, plein-air sketches, and imaginary compositions illustrate the glorious expressivity of drawings and watercolors. Five centuries of technique and a full range of styles fill out thematic and chronological sections, while exhibition materials and programming explore how the masters carefully selected media appropriate to the functions and subjects of their works. Contemporary artists will also discuss the continued relevance of these objects today.
