Museum docents are community members who serve on a volunteer basis and provide tours of the museum's collections and special exhibitions to visiting groups of all ages, ranging from first graders to adults. They also help staff programs such as Family Days and museum-wide events. All docents are trained to work with the permanent collection, the Orozco fresco, and special exhibitions.
Participation in the Docent Program requires a substantial commitment of time and energy on the part of volunteers, but it is tremendously rewarding. The docents currently enrolled in the program are a diverse, talented and interesting group of individuals. Enthusiastic supporters of the arts, they have in common a love for art, a desire to share their knowledge with others, and additional interests. Training sessions provide an opportunity for docents to meet curators and other museum staff, learn a great deal about art and teaching techniques, and become familiar with the full workings of the museum.
Periodically the Education Department recruits new members to the docent program. If you are interested in the program, please contact the Education Department at (603) 646-1469. The staff maintains a list of interested individuals, and sends out information when new docents are being recruited.
