The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the Hood Museum of Art two grants in the 1990s to help facilitate the integration of the museum's collections into the college curriculum. After these grants were successfully implemented, a challenge grant from the Mellon Foundation was matched in 2000 with generous gifts from Dartmouth College alumni and parents. The endowment created by these gifts has enabled museum to offer one- and two-week residencies for Dartmouth College faculty. During these residencies, the faculty members study and research the collections for the purpose of teaching in the museum. Over thirty-five residencies have been awarded to Dartmouth faculty and the museum has seen a marked increase in the use of its collections in the curriculum.
