The index works on a “word search” principle, using keywords to search the categories listed on the pull-down menus.
Use the “All Indexes” index for a quick search. For example, enter “Goya” to find all of the works by Goya in the collection.
The index “Object Type” is very useful in limiting searches. Use words such as drawing, print, painting, sculpture, watercolor, poster, photograph, musical instrument, clock, furniture, fluxus, scientific instrument, basket, mask, and so on, and then another index, such at “Artist Nationality” or “Geographic Location,” to further define the search.
Works by known artist/makers are catalogued with an “Artist Nationality” such as American. However, if you would like to find all of the objects from China, please search for an “Artist Nationality” of Chinese and a “Geographic Location” of China.
The index “Ethnic Group” can be searched for specific peoples, such as Hopi or Yoruba.
The index “Geographic Location” will provide access to objects from different continents, countries, and cultural areas.
