Please review our Conditions for a complete outline of terms for reproduction of images from the collection of the Hood Museum of Art. The basic guidelines for placing a photo request are outlined in this section.
Black-and-white 8 X 10-inch traditional format glossy print photographs available for study / research, personal use, or publication. B&W photographs are sold to the applicant.
Color transparency 4 X 5-inch photography (or occasionally an 8 X 10) available for publication purposes. Transparencies are sent out on a rental basis only, for a standard four-month period. Reproduction in color must be made from a 4 X 5 inch transparency.
35mm Color Slides are available for study/research, personal use, or lecture purposes. 35mm slides are sold to the applicant and may not be used for publication purposes.

Although the Hood Museum of Art owns the artwork and photography of said artwork in its collection, the copyright to said work is retained by any living artist and /or the estate or representative of any artist whose date of death is within the past 70 years. It is incumbent upon the applicant to obtain additional copyright permission when necessary. The onus of determining when this is applicable rests with the applicant (as per item 7 of our Conditions.)
The complete credit line as supplied by the museum must appear in immediate proximity to the reproduction in the publication, or in the section devoted to photographic credits (item 6, Conditions).
Each image must be reproduced unaltered and in its entirety unless approved in advance by the Hood Museum of Art. Images must not be cropped, bled off the page, printed on color stock or with color ink, nor have anything superimposed on the image. Preapproval is required for the reproduction of a DETAIL portion of the image; a proof must be submitted; the credit line must include the word "detail."
Permission is granted to the applicant for one-time use. Permission to publish must be obtained for each subsequent edition or reprint.
One gratis copy of the publication is required for our library. In the case of non-art-related textbooks, tear sheets or photocopies of all pages relevant to the image, including the title and copyright pages, will satisfy the agreement.
Prepayment is required on all invoices before any photographic material can be released. New photography will not be scheduled until advance payment is received. Payment must be made via money order or CHECK in the form of US dollars drawn on a US bank. We are not set up to receive payment via credit card. We do NOT accept electronic bank transfer payments. Please see Fee Schedule.
Invoices are generally sent out within a week of receiving the initial request. Following receipt of invoice payment, requests requiring new photography take up to two months' time. Requests with existing photography take up to one month. Rush orders may be considered at the rate of 200% but are not always an option.
All requests for permission to use an image from the collection for publication must be made in writing and include the intended use, the publisher, and expected date of publication. Requests via phone or e-mail are not accepted. All persons making a photo request will be referred to our website.
