Numbering almost 1,800 objects, the Melanesian collection is comprised primarily of works from Papua New Guinea that were first enhanced by a gift from Dartmouth Professor William Patten, who collected about 175 objects in Papua New Guinea in 1912, and then by a gift from the Harry A. Franklin Family collection of over 1,500 objects in 1990. The collection includes a wide range of object types such as ancestor boards, helmet and yam masks, skull racks, bone daggers, and body adornments made from bone, shells, and feathers.
