Contemporary (after mid-twentieth century)

In recent years, the Hood Museum of Art has begun to develop its collection of contemporary art from the larger Oceanic region. This nascent collection includes paintings by Australian indigenous artists such as Magdalena Ungwanaka and Maya Marda from the Central Desert, and pukamani poles by Declan Numini from Bathhurst Island. Building upon our collection of art from Papua New Guinea, recent additions of contemporary paintings by Laben Sakale John and G. A. Pinarau reflect the emerging painting movement in the nation’s capital of Port Moresby.
