Asia and Near East

The various artistic traditions of Asia are represented by works from China, Japan, Korea, and South Asia. This area is strongest in bronzes, ceramics, and works on paper and includes several superb Chinese tomb figures and a fine group of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock prints. From the Near East, the museum holdings include six ninth-century BCE stone reliefs from the ancient palace of Ashurnasirpal in present-day Iraq, as well as approximately fifty cuneiform tablets and a small collection of bronze artifacts from the region.
