A relatively small collection, the Hood's American photographs represent a broad overview of the development of the medium, from an 1850 daguerreotype of Daniel Webster by Southworth and Hawes to depression-era images by Walker Evans, Margaret Bourke-White, and Michael Disfarmer.

Some highlights with entries from the Hood collection catalogue American Art at Dartmouth:

George N. Barnard, City of Atlanta, GA, No. 2, 1866

Lewis Wickes Hine, Breaker Boys, 1911

William Henry Jackson, Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, 1879

Dorothea Lange, White Angel Breadline, 1932

Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Johnson Hawes, Daniel Webster, 1850
