The Hood Museum of Art has extensive holdings of American paintings, sculptures, prints, watercolors, and drawings, as well as decorative works of art. The collection's strengths include eighteenth- and nineteenth-century portraits, many depicting Dartmouth associates; nineteenth-century landscapes, especially images of New Hampshire's White Mountains; and examples of early-twentieth-century realism and modernism, including substantial holdings of works by artists John Sloan, Paul Sample (Dartmouth Class of 1920), and Ilse Bischoff.
