The Hood’s collection of Native American objects from the California region consists of about 180 mostly historic objects; about 130 are baskets, dating from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century and acquired by museum purchase and gift. In 1944, Mrs. Ida Farr Miller gave Dartmouth College around eighty baskets, half of which were Californian, from the collection of her mother, Ellen Frances Burpee Farr (1840-1907), which had been assembled from 1885 to 1907. The collection also includes some lithic artifacts, baby carriers, and carrying nets.
