European Print Course Makes an Impression

Sixteen members recently completed a four-week course on European prints at the Hood Museum of Art. Led by Curator of European Art Bart Thurber, participants learned about print media history, terminology, and techniques through the comparison of original works of art by Rembrandt, Dürer, Piranesi, Picasso, and other master printmakers. The Hood Museum of Art's winter members' course gave participants a unique, behind-the-scenes understanding of European prints and about the future direction of print acquisitions at the Hood.

Museum Collecting 101

How does a painting end up on the wall of the Hood Museum of Art? What decisions does a curator at an academic museum make when acquiring works of art? How do the art collections at the Hood contribute to the curriculum at Dartmouth College?

The sixteen motivated students in the Hood Museum of Art's Museum Collecting 101 class explored these questions and others for several weeks. In the end, the participants had the rare opportunity to select a work of art for purchase by the Hood - one that will remain in the permanent collection to help the Hood fulfill its purpose as a teaching museum.

Examples from the over one hundred Old Master prints donated by Jean K. and Adolph "Bucks" Weil Jr. '35 will feature prominently in the course. Each of the four sessions will examine different aspects of the print collection while providing an overview of printmaking techniques and the historical and cultural functions of prints. One session will include a tour of a print studio and a printmaking demonstration, another will be devoted to master printmakers Dürer, Rembrandt, Piranesi, and Picasso, and the final session will include a discussion of recent acquisitions and how they complement the current collections and help define the future directions of collecting at the Hood.
