Medical Students Enhance their Art of Observation

The Hood's Education Department has partnered with Dartmouth Medical School to pilot a program entitled The Art of Observation. The first program took place this spring when Dartmouth Medical students visited the Hood to learn how the power of observation of art applies to making diagnoses. Two pilot workshops at the museum engaged a number of the students in exploring selected works and sharing their finding with fellow students. "This is a creative program to help the participants look and think critically, and also communicate effectively," said Lesley Wellman, Curator of Education at the Hood. "Once they've carefully looked over a painting, the students have to report back to the group about what they saw. After a painting has been thoroughly described, the students discussed an interpretation, or diagnosis, of what it is about. It was a revealing exercise." The program will continue to be refined and will be offered again to incoming students in the fall.
