“My grandmother taught me, ‘someday this will keep you from going hungry,’ and it did.” —Madeline Shay

Husband and wife Lawrence and Madeline Shay were well known for their fine fancy basket work. Both used finely split ash that was left un-dyed. Madeline was respected for her perfection of the curly bowl, and Lawrence for his fine weaves. Both came from a long line of basket-making families and spent summers with their families, who sold their baskets at Poland Spring, Kennebunkport, and Lincolnville. Both were founding members of the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance and were generous basket-making teachers. Their daughter Caron Shay, who made this basket, continues their tradition of fine basketry today. She is a board member of the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance and a respected basket maker in her community on Indian Island.
