Joshua Lutz, American, born 1975
Untitled (Airplane), 2007
Digital C-print
Image: 22 x 27 in.; sheet: 30 x 35 1/2 in.
Purchased through a gift from Andrew E. Lewin, Class of 1981; 2009.34

Joshua Lutz began photographing the Meadowlands ten years ago as a documentary study of the thirty-two square miles of marshy wilderness that sits between New Jersey and New York. Lutz’s photographs are not only representations of the landscape of the Meadowlands but also portraits of the individuals who inhabit the area. They explore the distinct personalities of the “Meadowlanders” while also considering people’s relationships to their environs.

Lutz’s images combine a straight documentary approach with one that is open to anecdote and stories, while the theme of conflict between the contemporary view of urban planning and the natural compositions of the landscape is carried throughout the work in a fantastical language of irony. The Meadowlands have been known as a site of decades of environmental abuse, and Lutz obviously plays with the thematic clash of man versus nature. Here, a tree in the foreground dominates the left half of the picture plane, as if it is slowly overtaking the carefully laid out roadways and electrical towers behind.

Untitled (Airplane) depicts a large jet in the act of either taking of or landing, and there is a sense of dislocation or disjunction between the jet and the landscape, as if the image has been manipulated in some way. The slightly out-of-focus depiction of the airplane not only emphasizes its movement but also creates a feeling of uneasiness. The airplane’s symbolism has changed dramatically in the last decade, and this looming jet cannot help but bring to mind the possibility of danger or the threat of a crash.
