Lawrence Fane, American, born 1933
Mill Piece, 1998
Polychrome wood
73 x 42 x 60 in.
Purchased through the Miriam and Sidney Stoneman Acquisitions Fund; 2007.80

The sculptor Larry Fane's interest in engineering and the three-dimensional language of the functional object is apparent in the Hood's new acquisition Mill Piece. In this sculpture, Fane exploits the texture, color, and grain of the various woods from which it is constructed. The richness of its surface and the inventiveness of the forms give the work an intense physicality and liveliness. While it certainly evokes New England's industrial past, this "mill piece" is obviously not intended to be functional. These works and others from this phase of Fane's career have been labeled "machines of the mind" and were created in direct response to the work of a fifteenth-century Italian artist-engineer named Mariano Taccola. Fane studied Taccola's notebooks and drawings intensively in the 1990s, writing of his admiration for "their animated theatricality, their creation of a fantasy world in which mechanical inventions become protagonists in a massive sort of theater . . . Taccola's method of representation falls between accepted categories, and is idiosyncratic and original." This originality is also evident in Fane's work, which confidently asserts an alternate plane of reality that in turn encourages a deep engagement with the object.
