Mary Mitchell Gabriel was born in the Indian Township of Princeton, Maine, where she followed in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother to become a master in Passamaquoddy basketry. She first began making baskets, under her grandmother's tutelage, when she was seven or eight years old. Gabriel served as a senior counselor to the burgeoning basketry revival among Maine Indians throughout the twentieth century and continued to produce baskets of extraordinary beauty until her death at the age of ninety-six.

Gabriel's baskets were characterized as being both traditional and individualistic, ranging in type from the popular striped bowl to her "baked bean crock" to the larger sewing and flat baskets. Many of her covered baskets-such as this example which was collected by Watie J. Akins, a Penobscot elder, retired engineer, and basket collector-display her trademark of a braided frog handle and a particularly close durable weave. As Gabriel insisted, "If I am to be remembered for my baskets, I want them to live forever."
