herdSubhankar Banerjee, Indian, born 1967
Caribou Migration I, 2002
UltraChrome print
39 3/4 x 29 3/4 in.
Purchased through the Charles F. Venrick 1936 Fund; 2006.61

The herd of caribou seen in this photograph is named after the Porcupine River, which meanders through much of their range. Constantly on the move, this 123,000-strong herd’s yearly migration pattern covers 260,000 square kilometers and traverses the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other parts of northern Alaska as well as the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. The herd winters in the southern part of their range; then, in April, the females travel hundreds of kilometers north to the coastal plain to give birth. The Gwich’in Athabascan people have depended on this herd for food and clothing for thousands of years. Subhankar Banerjee traveled to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in 2001 and spent nearly a year photographing this pristine and colorful landscape and its wildlife.
